ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project aims at experiencing again the musical and cultural meeting of both Europe and China as it was lived by the artists and the audience back in the 18th century.

The creation is inspired by the story of the missionary and musician Teodorico Pédrini who had served Chinese emperors for ten years. Imagine for a moment the Chinese audience reactions when Pédrini played his sonatas for the first time; imagine the artist's sensation when he played the harpsichord in the Forbidden City, after a ten years journey throughout Asia...

Cultural meeting and cross-fertilization are central to this human and artistic experience. The concert gathers both Chinese and French musicians on stage. They will both be playing rare works from Teodorico Pédrini and Corelli along with Chinese opera repertoire.

An unique concert presented by Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu, a French baroque music ensemble and Shanxi Huaxia Root Art Troupe, specialist in Chinese traditional and folk music.

Organisers: le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu, Shanxi Drama Vocational College, Shanxi Huaxia Root Art Troupe, Feilong Zaitian Culture & Art Company, Le Pavillon Rouge des Arts Hong Kong

With the support of: Embassy of France in China, the Franco-Chinese Institute of Lyon, City of Lyon

BACKGROUND
Sent to China by pope Clement XI, the Lazariste missionary and recognized musician Teodorico Pédrini arrives in Beijing on the 5th of February 1711. The emperor Kangxi had requested European musicians at court and he immediately took him under his wings.

Apart from his musical tasks of composer and harpsichordist, he was assigned with court’s harpsichords maintenance and manufacture. He built two organs and wrote a tract about European music. He escorted the emperor to several journeys. He stayed in the service of three Chinese emperors of the Qing dynasty until his death in 1746.

From all his musical writings, we only have today his Dodici Sonate a Violino Solo col Basso collection whose original manuscript is still preserved in the National Library of Beijing. Two other scores would lie dormant in the Forbidden City archives nowadays. Beyond his own compositions, Pédrini introduced the imperial court to lots of other composers of his time like Corelli (some of his manuscripts are still preserved in Bei Tang church’s library in Beijing).

LE CONCERT DE L'HOSTEL DIEU

The Concert de l'Hostel Dieu consists of a solo vocal ensemble and an orchestra playing on early instruments, who give about sixty concerts annually, which are mainly devoted to the baroque vocal repertoire.

They are frequently invited to perform at international festivals and venues. The performances of the Concert de l'Hostel Dieu are always marked by a modern and dynamic approach to the baroque repertoire. Many of them involve different artistic disciplines. Innovative forms are developed and interfaces are created between oral traditions and 'classical' repertoire. In short, their artistic choices are bold and original.

As well as creating and performing, the Concert de l'Hostel Dieu also supports young artists at the beginning of their careers and endeavors both to appeal to younger audiences, and to perform in outlying areas, where access to cultural events are often limited.

Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu projects are funded by DRAC Rhône- Alpes, Auvergne Rhône-Alpes regional council, Lyon city council, ADAMI and SPEDIDAM.
